Images from your digital camera or phone, or downloaded at high resolution from a stock photo site or supplier's brochure, can look great but are far too large to use on a website. Therefore you will need to resize them for use on your website and optimise them to ensure fast loading time, and also avoid common pitfalls when working on the web.

Optimum saving Photoshop
Use the save for web command (CTRL + ALT + SHIFT + S).

This saves JPEG images with a significant reduction in filesize versus the standards "save" option.

NB It's a legacy feature in Photoshop CC editions but it's still there as well as the current export option.

Try an online optimiser
An online optimiser, such as TinyPNG can reduce the file size even beyond the savings offered by Photoshop.

Use descriptive file names
For search engine optimisation, while avoiding keyword stuffing, use a fully descriptive name of the file, e.g. samsung-galaxy-s7-mobile-phone.jpg, rather than IMG20943.jpg

Use only lowercase alphanumeric characters, hyphens or underscores in file names
Stick to alphabetical characters in lower case only, numerals, hyphens or underscores in file or folder names. This will avoid common issues with broken links.
